Growing up, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in science, but how? My first love was paleontology, but as I learned more about the world, I became interested in Egyptology, archaeology, marine biology, animal behavior, zoology, and ecology. I was insatiable. This made for a bit of a confusing journey when I was looking into colleges. As a high school student, you never fully understand what it's like to work in STEM careers until you start taking classes and speaking with advisors. In my case, I emailed several paleontologists at universities looking for advice, but never heard back. My journey to finally becoming a paleontologist is considered “non-traditional”. Instead of majoring in paleontology, which is actually only offered in a few undergraduate programs in the United States, I majored in Anthropology, patching my coursework with geoscience, biology, and other applicable courses. If I had access to a resource like the Careers Portal, it may have made my journey a bit easier.
On the Careers Portal, have your students browse the extensive list of STEM careers for organizations such as Chevron, AES, P&G, Caterpillar, and more. Watch videos of bat conservationists, data scientists, geologists, software engineers, and so many more! Download activity sheets to have students evaluate their own interests in these STEM careers to better help them realize their strengths and understand the requirements needed to pursue specialized careers in STEM.
Having access to no-cost STEM resources helps break barriers to science and bring diversity and representation into STEM. If we’ve learned anything from biology, we know that diversity makes for a healthier and more robust ecosystem, creating a stronger world, and that’s what the STEM Careers Coalition and Discovery Education is all about.
I can't wait for you to see how you can use the STEM Careers Coalition!
